New Year's Resolutions: The importance of Consistency & Sustainability

It's that time of year where the dreaded 'New Year, New Me' mentality takes up residence in many people's minds, encapsulated most explicitly in the 'New Year's Resolution.' Often these resolutions, made in haste after a couple of weeks' indulgence at Christmas, relate to fitness and weight loss. Self improvement is a great goal, but many people try to rush the process and take drastic unsustainable measures to achieve the desired result as quickly as possible. The reality is, these types of 'quick fixes,' - from cutting out sugars to calorie restricted diets - rarely work and are most likely to result in a rapid loss of motivation. This is why New Year's Resolutions of this nature rarely stick.

To avoid this unsatisfactory outcome, I spoke to JackFM about what to do instead. The interview aired on the 2nd of January, and here's what I had to say:

Fitness

"So a lot of people set unrealistic expectations of themselves at the start. What people always think is that they're going to have this perfect plan that is going to solve every single situation they're going through. A perfect plan doesn't exist. Start by mixing things up and find what you enjoy so that you can stay consistent in the gym. And make small achievable targets for every day to keep you motivated."

Diet

"Any fad diets are basically in my opinion worth avoiding when you're getting started. The reason for this is that they are too short term focused. Yes, you're going to lose a lot of weight fast, but are you really going to expect yourself to never eat sugar again in any form?? Because what happens at the end of the day is you'll do this diet, you'll lose all this weight. And once you're back to normal, you'll go back to your old habits"

So listen to this advice, stick to making small sustainable changes, and you'll be making good progress for long-term gains in no time!

Happy New Year!
